GLAST first light: Update August 27, 2008
Posted by sarah in: science , trackbackAfter diligently setting my watch for the NASA news telecon and getting comfortable on the couch, I realised that I couldn’t listen to the thing on an iPhone and had left my laptop at work (happens about once a month, good call woman). Doh.
From reading other accounts it sounds like it was quite an understated affair. The most important piece of news is that the mission has been renamed the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope – after the high-energy physicist Enrico Fermi. The new name also comes with a snappy-looking logo. So will that become ‘FGST’ or simply ‘Fermi’? We’ll see! You can read the official press release here.

The logo for the telescope formerly known as GLAST!
A cute bit of astro-goss (from the e-Astronomer) is that the first light announcement was delayed for ‘legal reasons’, while NASA were trying to locate Enrico Fermi’s relations to get approval for using the name.
