[Cross-posted from the .Astronomy blog]

Over at .Astronomy HQ we’re excited that the registration for the 2009 workshop in Leiden is under way. However I wanted to put here a little more info on the registration process, the form and the format of the workshop – so that we can learn more about you, the participants.

The workshop will be relatively small, with the number of participants limited to 50. This will allow us to make optimal use of the excellent Lorentz Center facilities. We’ve had a lot of interest and we expect that the workshop will fill up well before the starting date – so if you’d like to join us, please don’t wait to register.

Between us, the organisers, we know lots of people who are involved in great initiatives and projects in web-based science and astronomy. Some of these people will have received invites from the Lorentz Center to register for .Astronomy but there are plenty of places left for those who weren’t invited. If you didn’t get an invitation, this doesn’t mean we don’t want you to attend. In fact, we want you to attend more. This is why we’re advertising the workshop widely via Twitter and our blogs.

Who are you?

The exciting thing about organising the workshop is the prospect of meeting new people and learning about new projects, so we particularly invite those of you we haven’t met to come and talk about your work, your ideas, and join in the discussions. The mood will be relaxed and informal, so don’t be shy about submitting a short abstract or summary of what you’d like to talk about.

Be original. If formal talks arent your thing, you could do an experiment, lead a discussion session, play a game. We will do our best to accommodate your craziness.

Social networking is all about openness and participation and we want our workshop to reflect that. Talk to us, tell us about yourself, share your ideas. If you select the option on the registration form that you did not receive an invite from the Lorentz Center, a box will appear asking you to tell us more about why you’d like to attend.  It will really help us put together the best programme if you write something here about your background, your interests, your work. Particularly for the Astronomy Hack Day it would be useful to know how many of you will attend.

If there’s anything you’d like to discuss in more detail, feel free to email us at poc AT dotastronomy.com.

Travel support

We know that many of the .Astronomy participants are working educators, software developers and scientists who do not get paid to work on “.Astronomy-type” projects and may find it hard to find a source of funding for attending the workshop. I, for instance, should really be writing a conference talk about infrared astronomy instead of writing this blog post.

While there is no registration fee and lunches, coffee and snacks are provided by the Lorentz Center at no cost, we understand that the costs of reaching us may be prohibitive for some of you.

We will have some money available to help a number of participants with their travel expenses. We don’t know yet how much we will have so we can’t make any firm commitments on this yet. If you know it will be hard for you to find money to attend, please let us know in the box provided on the form and we will make a note of your request. In allocating travel funds, we will give priority to those still in education (students and PhD students), speakers and those travelling from overseas.

Again, if you have any specific questions or requests, do drop us an email on poc AT dotastronomy.com.

See you all in November!
